Understanding Altars: What are they and how do they help our Journey Back to Soul?

Hello! I am Janeth, the marketing director for The Journey Back To Soul. I’ve been on my journey to reconnect with all parts of my soul— and Altars have been a huge part of this connection, and the funny part is that I didn’t even know I had an altar at home. It was not until Maria Camila explained to me what an altar was during one of our meetings.

An altar is a special place in your home where you can put things that are important and meaningful to you, in my case I have a shelf where there is a note my grandma gave me, some crystal quartz, my tarot decks, pictures of my parents and my brothers, some dry flowers of the first bouquet that my partner gave me when we first met, a Hecate statue, some plants, candles, a photo of myself when I was five and a mirror, among other meaningful items that have been with me for the last couple of years and have helped my self-discovery journey.

After chatting for a while with Maria Camila I understood that that shelf was not only a shelf with random souvenirs, but a special place in my home, it is a place where I can set aside some time each day for reflection, a place where I say a little pray to Hecate, a place in my home in which I can see my younger self and make remember her and then look at myself in the mirror, who I’ve become. It is a place for deep breathing and where I will start short meditations, It is a place where I connect with myself.

Like me, many people may have a special place in their homes and use them as altars, which may be, without knowing, part of their spiritual practice. If you don’t have an altar, and creating one sounds like something that might interest you then read on!

What is an altar?

Altars are places of beauty and peace. They are places where you can connect with your soul, the Divine, and your ancestors.

They are also places where we work on our energy by performing rituals or meditations in order to clear out negative energies from our bodies so that we feel better physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

What does it look like?

Altars can be anything that you want them to be. They can be made from just about anything: a table, shelf, box, or even a tree stump! You might make your altar out of the ground (which is why it’s called an altar). Or you might find an old stone wall and use it as your altar. Whatever materials work and connect for you are what counts most!

It doesn’t matter where your altar is located either; whether inside or outside (or even both) will not affect how effective it will be in helping The Journey Back the Soul process.

What do you put in an altar?

An altar is a place where you can take time to reflect on yourself, your beliefs, and what you want to achieve. It can be used as an inspiration tool or a source of creativity.

It’s also good to have an altar if you are going through difficult times in your life and need some positive energy around you. An altar can help draw positive energy into your life so that it feels more like a safe place for healing instead of just being somewhere where bad things happen!

How do you make one?

  • Choose a sacred place for your altar.
  • Make it personal to you and make sure the location is one that feels good for you to be in, but also has enough space for all of your sacred items.
  • Choose the right objects and materials for you and the color that calls to you. You can use anything that works for you, either as a decoration or as an actual tool such as a bowl for your quartz or handmade Shipibo Altar Cloths that you can find on our website. The goal is to build your altar with everything that reflects who you are and what is alive for you currently.

How can I use my altar?

  • Use your altar to cultivate your spiritual practice.
  • Use your altar to help you internationalize a specific goal.
  • Use your altar to help you move through a specific problem.
  • Use your altar to help you pray and meditate on whatever is currently present for you.

Creating and using altars can be a powerful tool on your Journey

Altars are a powerful tool on your Journey Back to The Soul. They can help you create a daily ritual that connects you with the Divine, your inner self, and other people. They are also a place for you to connect with nature and allow nature’s energy into your life.

Creating an altar involves creating an area where you can meditate, pray or do any other spiritual practice in private. The best places for altars are in secluded areas such as parks or gardens because they provide privacy while still allowing access to nature’s energy through bird calls or wind blowing through trees nearby (or even just as simple as being near water).

Creating an altar can be a powerful tool on your Journey Back to your Soul. It is a space where you can meditate and pray, as well as store items that bring you comfort and happiness. The important thing is for you to choose what works best for you in each moment of your life! Try out some different things, see what resonates with you most, and start using these powerful tools today!
